Canicross: The Thrilling Sport That Keeps You and Your Pooch Fit

Canicross is a captivating and physically demanding sport that combines the joy of running with the companionship of your four-legged friend. One of the things that intrigued me about canicross is that a dog that is strong puller is required.  It just so happens that the dog I ended up taking home with me about 3-4 years ago has never really gotten past the stage of excessive pulling.  So, this definitely fits the bill as an exercise regimen for the two of us.

While there are races and it is a sport, I tend to lean toward canine and cross-country without going to the racing side of the fence.  This is particularly due to her being a tad too leash aggressive, partially my fault but also bred into her.

It should fit snugly but not be too tight. I chose a dog harness by Non-stop Dogwear because of the design.  This harness looks sharp and fits close to her body with few rub points.
  2. Waist Belt: A comfortable waist belt for the human runner is essential for distributing the pull force and preventing strain on your back. Look for one with padding and adjustable straps. Since I was on the Non-stop Dogwear Amazon store, I also chose a harness for myself, waist belt if you want to call it that.
  3. Bungee Line or Leash: The bungee line or leash connects you to your dog’s harness, allowing for shock absorption and reducing the impact of sudden movements. It also provides flexibility and freedom of movement during runs.  So, I switched from a static dog leash to a bungee line type of leash and this has made a difference.  There is no harsh stop and safer on the dog’s neck and head.

Trail Running Gear: Depending on the terrain you’ll be running on, you may need additional gear like trail running shoes, gaiters, and weather-appropriate clothing.  (It is recommended that you do not run on concrete, asphalt, or other man made surfaces since it will tear up your dog’s feet….plus it is boring AF.)
  5. Water and Hydration: Carry water for both you and your dog, especially on longer runs. Collapsible water bowls are convenient for providing hydration to your furry friend.
  6. Canicross Belt for Your Dog: In some cases, dogs may benefit from wearing a canicross belt that attaches to their harness. This can provide extra stability and control, particularly for larger or stronger dogs.
